Our Storm doors

are more popular than ever right now due to the rising cost of energy. Consumers can save on their heating and cooling costs by using a storm door. Storm doors save on heating costs by providing a barrier against wind coming in and warm air leaving the house. Storm doors save on cooling costs by allowing natural ventilation in the spring and summer.

There are 2 main types of storm doors; aluminum frame and vinyl or aluminum skin over a solid woodcore. One of the most important things is to match your storm door style to your entry door style.

Woodcore Doors

Woodcore is available in a basic to premium range as well. Woodcore provides the durability of a solid door and also offers a top and/or bottom ventilation system on specific models.

The Performer Patio Door

1. Do I need a storm door if I have a steel entry door?

Storm doors provide some major benefits even with a steel entry door. Energy savings both in the winter and summer. In the winter storm doors provide an extra barrier for heat loss and against wind penetration. In the summer storm doors allow ventilation without fear of bug infiltration; this reduces the need for air conditioning.

2. Will storm doors affect my steel door performance?

As long as you take advantage of the ventilation aspect of the storm doors, there is should be no issue with storm doors and steel doors.

3. Will storm doors add to the curb appeal of my house?

By selecting the correct style of storm door to match your entry door style, curb appeal is actually improved.

4. How do I maintain the brass or satin nickel finish on my hardware?

Wax the handle set with automotive wax regularly to maintain the bright finish. If the handle has dulled use a non-abrasive cleaner like Simple Green(TM) or Vim(TM) and a nylon scrub pad to clean the handle.

5. Water leaks in where the windows join in the center (top screen 2 Lite & 3 Lite doors).

The interlock that engages the top window with the cross bar is not engaged properly.

Lift the operating glass as high as it will go, push it toward the outside and lower it onto the cross bar. This engages the interlock (the bottom frame of top window has a “hook” toward the outside that hooks onto a lip on the cross bar keeping water out). These instructions are included in the installation manual and on the label on the bottom frame of the operating window. The installation manual is available for download on the “Installation” page.

6. How do I remove the operating window on my storm door (2 lite or 3 Lite doors)?

Lower the operating window roughly half way. Some of our doors include a feature to prevent the sliding window locks from moving in far enough to allow the window to come out. Depending on the model of door, you may have to remove the small plastic “buttons” from the bottom edge of the bottom window frame by prying them out with a screwdriver. For some doors move the on/off switch (may have a red plastic tab on the end), located on the sliding window lock, to the top position. This will allow you to move the window locks further toward the center of the window frame, allowing the window to come out of the door frame. Move the window locks as far as possible to the center of the window frame, move the window out of the door frame (3 or 4 inches – DO NOT MOVE THE BOTTOM OF THE WINDOW IN TOO FAR AS THIS CAN BREAK THE PINS AT THE TOP CORNERS OF THE WINDOW) and angle the window to one side. This will allow one of the “pins” on the top corners of the window to come out. The window is now free to come out of the door. Installation is the reverse of these steps.

7. How do I exchange the glass and screen on my full lite door for summer and fall?

The glass and screen are held in the door frame with vinyl retainers that slide into the inside of the door frame. These can be pried out of the door frame with a slot type screwdriver (you may want to use a cloth over the frame or tape the screwdriver shaft to prevent scratches when doing this). Have someone hold the glass in place while doing this to prevent it from falling out unintentionally. Once the retainers are removed the glass can be taken out of the door and the screen installed by snapping the retainers back in place. When putting the screen or glass into the frame insert the bottom edge first and be sure it is located as far to the outside as possible. This will allow the retainers to go back into the door frame properly. Illustrated instructions are included in the installation manual, which can be downloaded from the “Installation” page.

8. How do I adjust my closer(s) to have the door open further or latch automatically?

These issues usually relate to closer installation and adjustment.

Basically when the storm door is closed, the rod that comes out of the closer cylinder should only be extended slightly (1/8″) which allows the door to open fully and engages the “bypass” that accelerates the closing for the last 2 or 3 inches, latching the door properly.

9. How do I adjust the closing speed of my storm door?

The closer air bleed screw needs adjustment.

There is a screw in the center of the closer cylinder at the door end. Turn the screw counter clockwise with a Phillips screwdriver to speed closing. Turning the screw clockwise reduces the closing speed.

10. How do I prevent my storm door from staying open unintentionally with the AUTO HOLD(TM) closer?

The AUTO HOLD(TM) closer (the closer with the AUTO HOLD(TM) label) has an on/off feature. To turn off the AUTO HOLD(TM) feature, remove the rod end of the closer from the jamb bracket and turn the rod 180 degrees using a screwdriver through the hole at the end of the rod. There are instructions on the AUTO HOLD(TM) closer label as well.

11. How do I stop my triple track door from leaking between the top and bottom windows (Bon Air and Hampton doors)?

This indicates that the windows are in the wrong position for proper weather protection.

The window toward the outside should be in the top position and the inside window in the lower position to prevent leakage on triple track doors.

12. How do I re-install the windows in my triple track door?

The triple track windows are slightly different widths. The narrowest one goes to the outside and the widest one goes to the inside. The removal and installation of the windows is the same procedure as in the “How do I remove my operating window” FAQ.

13. How do I clean the glass on my door?

We recommend a solution of vinegar and water to clean the glass. A cleaner that contains ammonia should not be used. If your door includes the View and Vent(TM) feature, you don’t have to remove the glass to clean it. If your 2 lite or 3 lite door has a fixed screen, you will have to remove the operating window to clean the outside face. See “How do I remove the operating window…..” above.

14. How do I order parts for my door?

Parts can be ordered through the store where you purchased the door or you can order directly from us by calling our Customer Service Department at 1-800-541-7307 Monday to Friday between 8:30 AM and 6 PM ET or by sending an email to cust_service@aluminart.com. The store or our Customer Service Department will want to know the model number and serial number of your door to be sure we send the correct parts.

15. Where do I find the Model Number and Serial Number of my storm door?

If you have the installation manual, the installer may have written them on page 2 of the manual, as suggested. The part number and serial number are on a small label that is placed in the center of the top frame of our aluminum framed doors. It will be near the closer bracket, if there is a closer installed at the top of the door. Woodcore doors have the label on the edge of the door which may be on the hinge side or the latch side of the door. If the label has been removed you may be able to identify the door by finding the same model in the products section of the site.
